Jeevodaya is A Charitable & Non Profit Organization

Jeevodaya's services are now available to all cancer patients irrespective of their social status or the stage of the disease they are in.

All services in Jeevodaya are rendered free of cost

Jeevodaya is a professionally manned hospice rendering free palliative care to advanced cancer patients irrespective of caste, creed, class and religion. The hospice is run under the aegis of Jeevodaya Public Charitable Trust, which is a non-profit, non-religious, non-political organization. The chief promoter of the hospice is Franciscan Clarist Congregation of Alvernia Province Chalakudy-Kerala.

WHAT IS PALLIATIVE CARE?

Palliative Care is derived from the word 'Pallium' which means a 'cloak or a cover'. The original definition of Palliative Care by WHO read ‘Palliative Care is the TOTAL, ACTIVE care of patients whose disease is no longer responsive to curative treatment’. It has since been modified.

WHAT IS HOSPICE CARE?

Hospice is derived from the word ‘Hospitium’ to indicate the friendly relation between host and guest. The practice started in medieval Europe in the 17th century when places of rest were established for pilgrims who could not continue their journey, where they were fed and nursed –it is quite likely many of them died there.

Our Activities

How we came together……

It was God's Will! How else can we describe the sequence of events that culminated in the birth of Jeevodaya. Prof. Dr. Udaya Mahadevan, Professor of Social Work at Loyola College, Chennai and a true social worker in word and deed, played a pivotal role in bringing about the project. She was introduced to the FCC sisters by one her students - Mr. Babu Thelapilly. The FCC sisters from Alvernia province, Kerala, had come to Chennai, with a vision of a hospice in mind and a background of caring for cancer patients in Kerala. They were new to Chennai and needed guidance.

It was at the same time that two doctors - Dr. Manjula Krishnaswamy and Dr. Snehalatha – who were working in the cancer wing of a Government Hospital in Chennai

Motto of Jeevodaya

"If I can stop one Heart from Breaking,
I shall not live in Vain;
If I can Ease one Life the Aching;
I shall not live in Vain."

Jeevodaya was established on August 15th 1991, in Chennai, India. It is one of the most humanitarian and challenging projects of our times in India.

A group of committed people belonging to various religions and from different parts of the country have come to gether with the noble aim of rendering continuing service to the "POOR & ABANDONED CANCER PATIENTS". Jeevodaya is thus a supreme example of National Integration and Unity.

It is therefore Providence that has most appropriately ordained that JEEVODAYA DAY should coincide with the country's INDEPENDENCE DAY-15th August.

Role of Hospices in India

The hospice movement was obviously started by people who saw with their hearts, people, who not only saw, but, who reacted to the plight of these unfortunate people by reaching out to help them, as they limped along slowly and painfully, to finish the last lap of their lives.

We have studied the types of patients and the reasons for admission to our hospice and are convinced, more than ever, that there is scope to start many such hospices all over the country.

  • Destitute Patients
  • Abandoned Patients
  • Patients Shunned by Society
  • Inability To Be Managed At Home
  • Lack of Medical Infrastructure
